Texas Vehicle Inspections, Explained

Texas changed its inspection rules in 2025, leaving many drivers confused. Here's the short version: the state no longer requires an annual safety inspection for personal vehicles. But Harris County is an emissions county, so to renew your registration, most vehicles here still need to pass an annual emissions inspection. Wycliffe Automotive handles that for you.

Most gasoline vehicles, roughly two to twenty-four years old, need the emissions test. Generally, the two newest model years are exempt, as are vehicles 25 years and older and all-electric vehicles. If you're not sure whether yours qualifies, we'll check it against your registration first, no guesswork.

The process is quick, and we do it while you wait, right on the Katy Freeway. And if there's a problem standing between you and a passing result, like an illuminated check engine light, we're a full-service shop, so we can diagnose and fix it and get you registered, all in one stop.
